If you thought your divorce was bad….

Ohio divorcees may think they are going through the most difficult time of their lives. Some are starting over again…figuratively and literally. Others are trying to regain some semblence of a normal family life. Regardless of what changes they are experiencing, they may pale in comparison to a pair of Cincinnati law professors who have been embroiled in a war of domestic litigation for nearly a generation.

The two had been married for 10 years before initially filing for divorce. However, they have been back and forth to court for the last 17 years. Their dispute has been legendary, with numerous appellate petitions (and admonishments) from the court.

The years of litigation between the parties has resulted in more than 1,400 filing entries (1,000 more than a typical divorce). Several judges have voiced their disappointment with their behavior; saying that they should be “embarrassed and ashamed of their behavior.”

The case has become so infamous that many in Cincinnati’s domestic relations bar know about it.

The matter is also a cautionary tale for those who believe that they can protect themselves (and their legal rights) by promoting vicious battles simply to impose their will upon the other party. Not only is this tactic very expensive, it can have a profound and detrimental effect on children of a divorce.

Suffice it to say, there may be tough emotional (and financial) times in a divorce, but parties must keep things in perspective and focus on what is important: getting through the divorce and starting a new life.
