Columbus native and former Buckeye charged with domestic violence

Husbands and wives in commit to give one another their deepest love, put their spouse’s interests above their own and care for one another tenderly. It is on the foundation of fidelity, trust and love that most people in Columbus and elsewhere find success in marriage. Although most people realize that partners will not agree on every subject all the time, some turn violent when these disagreements occur. Repeated occurrences of domestic violence can destroy relationships, lead to divorce and can have long-term legal repercussions.

Although not in a spousal relationship, an apologetic Jared Sullinger, a former Ohio State basketball star, recently issued a statement expressing his embarrassment over a domestic dispute between him and his girlfriend; a situation that went public. Apparently Sullinger and his girlfriend were arguing and the situation escalated when the basketball player confiscated her phone and pinned her down. The girlfriend had begun packing her belongings.

Authorities were notified of the situation and they took Sullinger into custody on charges of assault and battery, witness intimidation and destruction of private property. Sullinger appeared in Waltham District Court in Massachusetts, where he plead not guilty and was later released on $5,000 bail. His former Ohio State coach expressed support for Sullinger, the 21st overall NBA Draft pick in 2012, and even mentioned his wish that Sullinger was returning to play for the Buckeyes this season.

Domestic violence charges are not limited to people in spousal relationships. Indeed, people can be charged if they are family members committing violent crimes against one another and if they are in dating relationships. Guidance from an experienced attorney may help people find resolution when physical abuse takes place or allegations are made.
