Optimism amid bleak child abuse case

When family issues in Ohio arise, people react to stressful and sometimes unpleasant situations in different ways. Sometimes people handle them by talking through the issues and eventually find common ground, but unfortunately other times these issues can ignite violent behavior. Domestic violence can happen under a variety of circumstances. When it involves a child, however, it is difficult for the accused to garner sympathy.

Minnesota Vikings running back, Adrian Peterson, recently expressed appreciation to his friends, family members and fans after his two-year-old son died from injuries he sustained in an aggravated assault earlier in the week. The child was admitted to a local hospital and was in critical condition following the attack. Peterson stood alongside his father and conveyed his thanks to people who had been thinking about his family during the ordeal. Peterson reportedly missed one practice after his son’s passing.

The child’s mother was in a relationship with the man accused of the attack. South Dakota law enforcement officers responded to the situation and charged the man with aggravated battery and aggravated assault of an infant. It appears that the head injuries the child sustained and consequently died from were likely abuse related. It is also likely that because the child passed away from these injuries that the accused will have additional charges brought against him.

When a domestic violence complaint of any kind is filed, the consequences can be serious. Not only can charges be made against the accused abuser, he or she could also be subject to severe penalties, including fines, permanent protective orders and imprisonment among others. People accused of domestic abuse may find it helpful to consult with an experienced attorney.
