Domestic abuse may cause chronic maladies

Domestic violence and abuse in Ohio comes in many forms. Physical, verbal and emotional abuse may be among the most commonly known types of abuse, but whatever method an abuser uses, there are often long lasting physical and psychological maladies that a domestic abuse victim suffers. An abused person may never forget the torment he or she endured, particularly when a chronic medical condition results and serves as a daily reminder of the atrocities that were inflicted.

It may be surprising to find out that 3 to 4 million women in the United States report a domestic violence incident every year. The United States is a country that many nations consider to be civilized and cultured, yet that very statistic may suggest the opposite of refined and educated behavior. A recent research study endorsed by the American Medical Association reveals that women who experience domestic violence also experience significant health conditions.

One woman was attacked by her fiancée for the first time days before their wedding. After the couple was married, the abuse continued. The woman reported that she endured a beating that was more than two hours in length. Two and a half years after the two were married, the woman filed divorce. Now, 20 years later, she suffers from short term memory loss and aching joints; both conditions are believed to have been caused by physical abuse.

People who experience domestic abuse in any form can suffer long term physical and psychological consequences. When a person is accused of or experiencing domestic abuse, it may be worthwhile to seek the advice of an experienced attorney.
