Husband involved in high asset divorce flees the country

On Behalf of | Dec 27, 2013 | High Asset Divorce |

There are many facets to divorce that can be challenging to deal with. Some people in Ohio experience difficulties as they determine child custody assignments, divvy up marital property and determine child support or alimony payment schedules. When one spouse flees the country amid divorce proceedings, however, it can be even more challenging to finalize a divorce and move on.

Appellate Court records reveal that a wealthy Chicago couple’s divorce was finalized on October 1, 2013, but there are a number of loose ends that are still keeping legal teams representing both the husband and wife busy. Apparently the husband fled the country, took up residence in Europe and moved millions of dollars offshore with him. The man allegedly ignored multiple court orders and court issued warrants. He would most likely face jail time if he were to return to Illinois.

Attorneys representing the husband are questioning whether or not the divorce is valid. In fact, they stated that it is their opinion that the two are not divorced. After ignoring the court orders and warrants, a judge allowed a default judgment to be filed against the man and his lawyers were not allowed to attend an important hearing where the size of the estate was determined.

There are many facets of divorce to consider when a couple chooses to part ways. Whether an offshore account or other assets are part of the marital property that is to be divided, a high asset divorce case can be complex. When people are divorcing, they may find it helpful to seek advice from an experienced attorney.
