In wake of protests, Cleveland PD agrees to change

Police departments across the nation have been under fire in recent months for questionable tactics that have been used against citizens, especially minorities. Incidents have led to numerous protests as well as the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Most recently, protests broke out in Cleveland, Ohio, early this week after a white Cleveland police officer was acquitted for the role he played in the 2012 fatal shooting of two unarmed African Americans.

Though unrelated, the city of Cleveland reached an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department to follow strict new rules regarding the use of deadly force just days later.

Back in December, the Cleveland Police Department was reprimanded by the Justice Department for engaging in unnecessary and excessive use of force against citizens. This week, it was reported that the city reached an agreement with the Justice Department that seeks improvements.

In addition to obeying strict rules on the use of force, the Cleveland department has also agreed to have its operations overseen by an independent monitor to ensure that changes are being implemented.

A community police commission has also been created to reform use-of-force policies, promote bias-free policing and stop retaliatory force, the Washington Post reported.

While we can all respect the work that many police officers do to keep us safe, we cannot allow certain officers to abuse their power and treat citizens unfairly, especially based on the color of their skin.

Unfortunately, bias is a problem in many police departments in Ohio and across the nation. It is extremely important that people who believe that they are being treated unfairly in criminal cases because of their race work with an experienced criminal defense lawyer so that their rights are protected.

At our Columbus, Ohio, law firm, we fight aggressively for our clients who have been accused of crimes because we understand that their futures are in jeopardy. To find out more about our firm and the cases we handle, keep reading
