Ohio principal accused of soliciting a ‘minor’

A principal from northeast Ohio is already feeling the repercussions of conviction after being accused of soliciting a teen, who was actually an adult posing as a minor.

The 35-year-old principal of Henry Defer Intermediate School in Streetsboro was arrested last week and was set to appear in court this week.

Charges were filed after authorities received a tip in March that the principal was having an online conversation with a "13-year-old girl" that allegedly had to do with sexual contact. The “teen” was actually an adult. The adult’s identity has not been revealed, other than to confirm that it was a civilian and not a member of law enforcement.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office and the Twinsburg Police conducted an investigation, and later arrested the principal and charged the man with attempted importuning, one misdemeanor count.

Since the arrest, the school district announced that the principal has been “relieved of his duties,” a local news station reported. That means the principal has likely already lost his job as a result of the accusations.

While the authorities and school officials undoubtedly need to take allegations like this seriously, it’s also important to remember that a person’s life is on the line. At this point, the details of the allegations have not been reported, so it is easy to speculate.

However, It will be crucial to make sure that this man is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. As we have learned time and time again, the authorities don’t always get it right -- and the same can be said for the media.
