2 men admit to smuggling heroin via drone

Ohio residents might be interested to learn that a drone was used to smuggle drugs from Mexico into the United States. On April 28, border patrol cameras allegedly videotaped two men picking up drugs near Highway 98 in California. Later on, both of the men pleaded guilty to smuggling 28 pounds of heroin into the U.S. using a drone.

The incident marks the first time that a drone has been caught carrying drugs over the U.S. border. However, law enforcement officials involved with the incident said that drug-carrying drones are a growing problem. As security on the border tightens, drug traffickers have been caught using tunnels, jet skis, small aircrafts and now drones to transport controlled substances.

Though law enforcement officials are concerned about drug-carrying drones, they say that the transportation method may not be very profitable for drug smugglers. Small drones can only carry a limited amount of cargo, and they are only capable of flying for about one hour. Despite these challenges, the Drug Enforcement Agency says that drug-carrying drones are being used by Mexican drug cartels because they are perfect "drug mules." Reports on Mexican media allege that drug cartels are now ordering custom-made drones from engineers.

A person who has been accused of transporting controlled substances via drone might want to have representation from an attorney. An attorney may conduct a thorough investigation into the accused person's alleged connection to the drone in order to look for flaws in the prosecution's case. If the accused person was not the owner of the drone, an attorney may argue that they had no knowledge of its contents before finding it.
