U.S. alleges drug trafficking among Venezuelan military leaders

Much of the cocaine that reaches the streets of Ohio comes from South America, and a case against two Venezuelan military leaders is being prepared by prosecutors at the U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn. A source close to the investigation revealed that the federal government will charge two generals in the Venezuelan national guard with conspiracy to traffic cocaine to the United States. One of the generals about to be charged even held a top position at Venezuela's National Anti-Drug Office at one time.

These charges have emerged out of a far-ranging federal investigation concerning cocaine trafficking out of Venezuela. The U.S. government alleges that several leaders within the Venezuelan National Guard and armed forces participate in large drug trafficking operations. Investigators also suspect involvement among influential members within the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Venezuelan officials have yet to respond to the news that the generals can expect to be charged. Previous comments regarding drug trafficking allegations have been dismissed by Venezuelan officials. They claim the investigation is politically motivated and meant to undermine the current Venezuelan government.

A person in the United States charged with a drug crime does not have the luxury of being temporarily beyond the reach of authorities like the generals in Venezuela. Someone stateside arrested for drug trafficking might benefit from the representation of a criminal defense attorney. An experienced attorney could review the prosecution's evidence to determine if it was obtained in a constitutional manner. If the person's rights were violated, then the attorney might request that the prosecutor drop the case or reduce charges.
