Ohio poised to modernize domestic violence law to protect all intimate partners

smiling couple.jpg

A boyfriend or girlfriend in a relationship may soon get legal protection against intimate partner violence under Ohio law. According to WKYC News in Columbus, state law historically allowed protective orders only for spouses, unmarried couples living together, and family members - not for the dating boyfriend or girlfriend in an intimate relationship.

With House Bill 392, however, that might change.

A bipartisan effort

House lawmakers today passed HB 392 by an 89-0 vote. The Senate will get it next. Ultimately, if the bill manages to become Ohio law, our state will join the majority of states (all except Georgia) that have modernized domestic violence law.

WKYC News quotes Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, who co-sponsored the bill:

"By modernizing Ohio's domestic violence laws to include individuals in serious dating relationships, we can help victims in any abusive relationship access the recourse they need to end the cycle of violence."
