Why divorce filings skyrocket this time of year

The new year is all about starting fresh and making new goals, and for some Ohio residents, that means finally ending a marriage that is no longer working.

January is informally known as Divorce Month because family law attorneys throughout the nation say it’s the most popular month of the year for divorce filings. Yesterday, the first Monday after New Year’s, has also been dubbed Divorce Day as it is supposedly the busiest day of the year for divorce filings.

There are likely a couple different factors that influence the post-New Year’s divorce spike. For one, as we said earlier, the new year is a time when people resolve to improve their lives, whether it is by losing weight, starting yoga or ending an unhappy marriage.

Another factor likely has to do with the holidays. Many parents choose to put off filing for divorce until after the holidays in order to spend one last holiday season as a family. Some also believe that the magic of the season could somehow reignite their love.

However, the holidays can also put a lot of stress on relationships, especially ones that were on the rocks to begin with. Couples who were in a bad place before the holiday season often end up in an even worse place after the holidays have wrapped up.

If you are one of the many Ohio residents who are thinking about filing for divorce this month, you can take solace in the fact that you are not alone.

Of course, divorce can be difficult no matter how many others are in the same boat, which is why it is important to work with a family law attorney who can give you the support and guidance you need.
