Is it possible to have a good divorce?

Chances are that you never intended for your marriage to end in divorce. The end of your marriage can be an emotional time, and the divorce process itself can add to the stress. While it may seem that there is nothing good about the situation, it may be possible to have a relatively good divorce.

Even a good divorce is still a divorce. However, some actions can help you get through your divorce as easily as possible.

Make time for self-care

Your life can get hectic as you begin going through the divorce process. However, it is important to schedule time for self-care. Good self-care can help you stay physically and mentally well, so you can better manage the stress in your life.

Self-care may include basic healthy practices, such as exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and eating quality food. However, divorce is especially stressful, so you may need to take additional steps toward self-care. This may include journaling or talking to friends, family members or a therapist. It may also include a little bit of pampering, like taking a long bath or getting a massage.

Identify your values

During marriage, spouses often make decisions together. However, this will probably not be the case during and after divorce. In this time of change, it may be advantageous to get to get to know yourself again.

Before you get too involved in the divorce process, you may consider clarifying what values you care most about. Once you have identified your values, you can consider how you may apply those values to your divorce. This can help you focus on the things that matter most to you instead of letting emotions drive you in a direction that is not in your best interests.

Get organized

Being properly prepared for divorce can also help promote a smooth divorce process and may even help you reach more of your desired divorce outcomes. If you have a realistic understanding of your family’s financial situation and the divorce process, you are less likely to be caught off-guard during your divorce. If you have your important documents organized and accessible from the start of your divorce, your divorce team can implement the most appropriate strategy right away.

Organization may include:

  • Collecting your own copy of all your family’s financial documents
  • Filing important documents in a logical way
  • Examining your family’s current spending habits
  • Projecting your future financial situation
  • Researching your rights during divorce

Some parts of your divorce may be out of your control. However, you can take steps to promote self-care, to understand what is important to you and to get organized. By controlling these factors, you can help yourself have the best divorce experience that is possible under the circumstances.
