George Lucas and Mellody Hobson engaged

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2013 | Family Law |

2013 will be a year of transition for many celebrities. Some will have children, others will have breakout roles, and some will get divorced. With New Year’s a popular time for people to get engaged, it seems fitting to report on a celebrity engagement.

Star Wars creator George Lucas has announced that he and longtime girlfriend Mellody Hobson are engaged. It appears that recent sale of his franchise to Disney meant more than just the end of an era for the 68-year-old director. Lucas and Hobson, who is the president of Ariel Investments and frequent contributor to ABC’s Good Morning America, have been dating for seven years. The marriage will be the second for Lucas, who was last divorced in 1983. This will be Hobson’s first marriage.

Whenever financial giants and celebrities decide to tie the knot, it is amusing to talk about prenuptial agreements. The eccentric terms and expectations can make for interesting celebrity gossip. For example, Katie Holmes reportedly received $3 million for every year that she was married to actor Tom Cruise. Khloe Kardashian’s prenup with Los Angeles Clippers forward Lamar Odom includes a monthly shopping budget.

While there are a number of celebrity prenup stories, it is important for our readers to understand that prenuptial agreements are essentially contracts that couples incorporate to avoid disputes regarding property ownership (and division of financial assets) in the event of a divorce. They are commonly used by couples entering their second marriage who want clear definitions on what is to be separate property during the course of the marriage.

Indeed you don’t have to be a billionaire to consider a prenuptial agreement. If you have questions, an experienced family law attorney can help.
